INTIMX began as a question: how does the queer community relate to social media? Not a simple one.
At the time, platforms like Instagram and Facebook were genuinely revolutionary. Suddenly you could find other queer people near you, build community across distance, see yourself reflected in others. But the other side of that coin was just as real. Comparison. The creeping feeling of being not queer enough, or too queer even. Connections formed purely on the basis of shared identity, sometimes with people who turned out to be harmful.
The project draws on Lacan's concept of extimacy: the uncanny way the most intimate parts of ourselves are also the most exterior, already shaped by the gaze of others, already public. Social media didn't invent this condition, but it made it impossible to ignore. Intimx wanted to hold both truths at once: the genuine community that visibility makes possible, and the instability it introduces into how we understand ourselves.
Intimacy, here, is treated not as something private or fixed, but as porous, constructed, and in constant negotiation.
The project emerged from within KIDZ. My role was in the curation and setup, the design of the research questionnaire, and a recorded interview that became part of the installation itself.
The permanent exhibition was an open room: loose silhouettes of bodies painted directly on the walls, screens with headphones carrying video testimonies, vertical fabrics hanging from the ceiling as projection surfaces. A space designed to hold difficult questions quietly.
But then the space was activated. The Recoleta Cultural Center, one of Buenos Aires' most established cultural institutions, became something else entirely: drag makeup workshops, voguing classes, poetry readings, queer history reading groups, visual arts markets, creative writing workshops, parties. We had won the right to use the space through an open selection process. We used it to bring our community inside.
That was the part that stayed with me. Taking an institutional space and filling it with life. The building gave us legitimacy. We gave it a pulse.
